Stora Skuggan is a Stockholm-based niche perfume house. Its five founders (Anna Barkne, Tomas Hempel, Olle Hemmendorff, Jonas Nordin and Martin Nicolausson) met in 2005 as students at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm.
The group spent years learning perfumery and developing their approach before officially launching Stora Skuggan in 2015 with their first fragrance, Fantôme de Maules. They have described working on each scent collaboratively, building it around a story or concept over an extended period rather than following a conventional release schedule.
The name "Stora Skuggan" is Swedish. The house's fragrances are presented as eau de parfums with accompanying narrative or mythical themes rather than being marketed around single named perfumers.
