Cold Comfort

There are forms of comfort that ask nothing of us.

The hush beneath eastern hemlocks after fresh snow. The cool breath of stone and evergreen. Resin pulsing slowly beneath bark while the air itself remains sharp enough to quiet the mind.

Cold Comfort explores that paradox: the warmth found within cold places.

Camphor rosemary, Spanish sage, and white camphor open with crystalline clarity, clearing the senses like a walk through winter woods after dusk. As the brightness settles, ancient resins emerge. Labdanum and myrrh lend the composition an esoteric amber glow, burnished by the dry sweetness of Virginia cedar and the green gravity of spruce and eastern hemlock.

Beneath it all lies the forest floor itself. Earthy patchouli, the aromatic grasses of anthopogon, and porcini mushroom evoke damp needles, weathered bark, and rich humus where decay gives rise to new life.

Rather than opposing warmth and cold, Cold Comfort reveals how closely they can coexist. It is the fragrance of shelter found not beside a fire, but among trees that have endured countless winters—still fragrant, still standing, their silence offering a different kind of solace.

Wild Veil natural perfumes are composed by me, Abby, using homemade, wildcrafted and organic aromatics in Vermont. These include my handmade enfleurage, tinctures, enfleurage extraits, absolutes, resinoids and concretes, and floral waxes. I spend as much time growing plants and foraging as I do composing perfumes.

The best way to experience a natural perfume is to apply it to well-moisturized skin, without rubbing in (absorption only shortens the wear time of fragrance) and without scrubbing off. Natural perfumes are dynamic and take a minimum of 2 hours to reach their final stage, or dry down. Enjoy the alchemical changes as they unfold from the initial intensity of top notes, to the warmth of the heart, to the depth of lower base notes.
