Garlois 2025 - Meghalaya - India - Pure Artisan Hindi Oud Oil - Dehn al Oud

Jungle: Garo Hills, Meghalaya

Species: Agallocha - Wild

Distillation: June 12 - 22nd, 2025 - 2 Day Soak, 12 Day Collection

Class: Traditional Stainless Deg and Bapkha - Wood Fired - Distilled exclusively from high grade "red" wood and shavings from a single old tree around 150 years old

Profile: New Oil with, surprisingly, an Ateek Profile

**Old Tree Tea Leaves, Nutmeg, Saffron, Raspberry, Hints of Florals, Edible Tree Barks, Hints of Smoke and Ancient Resin, Ateek Vibes

This is a really fun small batch of oil I made not from a tree we took down ourselves, but was able to get some incredible wood and the top grade shavings from a singular 150'ish year old wild tree from the mountains of Garo HIlls, Meghalaya.

Surprisingly, despite being a batch I made in 2025 - it really has a tonality more similar to the Ateek oils I've been offering. You'd never guess this oil isn't decades old.

ABOUT

The town of Tura serves as the largest urban center and gateway to nearby attractions such as Nokrek National Park and Balpakram National Park, both important for wildlife and ecology. If you've peeked through the shop... these names should be sounding familiar.

The Garo People

The Garo people, known to themselves as A’chik Mande, are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group forming the majority population of the area. They follow a matrilineal social system in which lineage and property pass from mother to daughter.

They inhabit not only Meghalaya but also parts of Assam and Bangladesh’s Mymensingh region. Their culture is characterized by community-based village life, clan organization, and festivals involving dance and drumming.

Hence, if “Garlois” refers to a region or community in Meghalaya, the intended term is Garo Hills or Garo people, both of which are central to Meghalaya’s geography and cultural landscape. And so, I named this oil in honor of the local Garo People, known to themselves as the A'chik Mande.

SCENT

This oil really surprised me when it came in. After a short soak of 2 days, and then 12 days of continuous juicing back in June of 2025, I was expecting a very fresh smelling oil that maybe needed a year or two on the shelf before getting it up in the shop.

Lo and behold, what came in had more in common with one of my decades old Ateek oils than one that was freshly juiced. This oil smells ancient... not 4 months old. Must have been a really amazing tree!!

To my nose, I get hints of florals, deep jungle blossoms carried in on gentle breezes through the thick forest.

Wisps of Smoke, Saffron Threads and Tart Red Berries - like some warm and delicious pastry simmering over the heat of gentle agarwood coals - wrapped in the deep exhalations of ancient jungles.

Personally, I also really love Tea Notes in Oud oils, and Garlois smells like superb, died tea leaves from ancient Yunnan tea trees. Something that only the age and wisdom of old bones and deep roots can draw out of the bedrock of the mountains.

At the time of release (October 2025), Garlois is only a few months old. Considering how it has started fresh out of the still - I can only imagine how INSANE this oil will smell in a few years. Be sure to take advantage and maybe consider stocking a few bottles. This oil is going to be one hell of a value in the years to come!
