The Chinese Huamei is a tiny bird with a beautiful song. Its eyes are ringed by distinctive markings of violet and white lines that cause it to appear as if the bird were a stage performer, a Jingju diva in full make-up. The name Huamei means painted brow, or eyebrow, which refers to these dramatic marks. I imagine this bird as a tiny Opera star, and its fragrance is a stunning vintage makeup case from the early 20th century.

Huamei birds have been kept as caged pets since the Ming dynasty, and the practice of keeping them as caged song-birds continues today. The symbolism of this beautiful bird is one that relates to many. It is the idea that we are each gifted with our own exquisite voice, endowed with our own unique charms and beauty, and yet, we too are so often kept as caged pets, the prisoners of overarching constructs that take us hostage in life.
