FAKE IT. JUST DON’T EXPECT THEY’LL MAKE IT.

People are starting to get whiffs of it. The fakeness of things.

It’s not exactly a new thing, but the whimsical flowery fakery seems to be louder than ever.

Oud is an easy example. You and I both know: most “oud” perfumes are nothing but bottled storytelling // bottles of marketing fiction. A narrative. A mirage dressed up in myth – “depth”, “mystery”, “sensuality” – and they charge you a pretty penny.

But when using real oud is considered “commercial suicide,” what are we really buying into? Just smoke and folklore. Oud becomes a ghost note – invoked everywhere, included nowhere.

And we’re not even talking rare oud here. Not wild, aged, sinking-resin oud. Just any oud. The stinky-socks-smelling gunk they call the white wood distilled in Laos that’s promoted as the star of the show in the priciest ‘oud’ perfumes.

SO HOW?

This is not an elaborate, over-engineered composition. You’re getting a curated selection of… saying “the world’s finest aromatics” sounds almost disingenuous – except that’s what’s in this frag.

It’s wild when you think about it:

There are aromatics in this bottle that are out of reach for 99% of perfumers.

Not just hard to find – non-options. Choices absent from even the niche-est perfume organs. Nose-bending scents, perfumes in themselves, that are simply not an option to unleash onto your finest roses.

— Myitkyina 1987

— Kachar 1979

— Olde Hoi An

Using just an echo of one of these would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most perfumers.

But Mélange Privée doesn’t whisper. It SHOUTS – from the tops of ancient, resin-soaked mountains.

And when I say that this is a simple, carefully curated composition, it means that these aren’t ghost notes. I’m not selling you fiction. One spritz is all it’ll take to make that clear.

THE OOZE OF OUD

Vintage Kachar’s molasses-like saccharine zest, a red liqueur tone with a syrupy accord that’s almost edible – tinged with clove. A herbal red wildflower suave fused with rooibos tea – tinged with pink pepper.

That mingles with the leathery soul of old-school Burmese agarwood’s sun-dried tobacco earthiness, a dash of black tea and a soft toasted caramel tone – kissed by castoreum.

Mélange Privée also lets you feast on the diffusive lemony tang of aged Ta’ifi rose distilled in the 1980s. When even rose is often kicked out in favor of a synthetic sub, the scent of a fine Ta’ifi – distilled for an actual Sultan who spared no expense to secure the earliest-morning, coolest harvest – is almost mythical. Who even knows about rose of that caliber?

Drench this rose with the deep resinous rouge of honeybush-scented wildflowers, a fig-plum-tobacco accord that reminds you of aged books and antique leather. Then tan it all with a sencha bitterness: that green, medicinal, narcotic Vietnamese sinensis signature.

DON’T BLOW IT

Some perfumes you make because you can. You chase a genre, stretch a muscle, play with a new fougère because the community’s watching.

Then there are perfumes you make because you have to. Not to sell. Not to trend or because you must to build your portfolio.

You make a perfume like this because you’re compelled to. Because it’s a privilege to – a chance even the most fortunate perfumers may get once in their lives.

Still, you could argue it’s a waste…

None of the ouds in here will be made again – can be made again. Once the Ta’ifi is gone, a perfumer forty years from now may obtain a batch distilled this year. But will look back at this time you’re in. At the ouds the rose got to dance with. And she’ll will be like 99% of perfumers and perfume lovers

Featured Testimonials…

I don’t say this too often but this is one of the best things I have ever smelled. May be 2 bottle worthy

Starts like an orange-cherry sparkling soda pop fizzy delight and then slowly blends into the best smelling most dense rose blends ever!

Hats off EO Team!
