Zabad

Zabad Attar is a traditional Arabian solid perfume made from civet, resins, and spices. In the beginning, it referred only to civet. Over time, it came to mean a rich type of perfume created by skilled Arab perfumers. They transformed strong raw ingredients into refined and balanced scents.

This solid perfume included more than civet. It blended resins like frankincense, myrrh, amber, and ambergris with herbs and spices such as camphor, mint, patchouli, cedar, saffron, cinnamon, cloves, and onycha. Mixed with natural oils, these ingredients created a scent that was deep, woody, fresh, and slightly animalic.

Making this perfume took great skill and time. Traditional methods like infusion and maceration helped the aroma sink into the civet. One rare step, fumigation, involved treating the paste with smoke from fragrant woods and resins. This smoke gave it a rich and lasting character. After blending, artisans aged the paste for years to smooth and mature the scent.

In daily life, Zabad Attar had many uses. People used it as a perfume, hair and skin treatment, and even a remedy for headaches. Moreover, it held spiritual meaning, used as protection against the evil eye and added to dowries. In fact, a little went a long way, which showed its strength and value.

I brought this tradition back to life by recreating Zabad Attar using classical methods. Turning raw civet into something soft and beautiful required care and patience. Each ingredient was added step by step, and I allowed the scent to settle and develop between stages. As a result, the final fragrance is worthy of a wedding gift, perfect for those who love deep, traditional scents.
